Edward Payton photographs, etchings and sketchbooks

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection consists of photographic prints taken in the early 1900s by Edward Payton. The photographs are mainly of landscapes taken by Payton during his travels around Aotearoa New Zealand, but there are also photographs of Māori, Pākehā settlers, pā sites and settlements. The collection also contains etchings by Payton and photocopies from his sketchbooks.

The collection includes sepia-toned and black and white images in a variety of print sizes.

George Fraser Gallery exhibition records

This collection consists of a visual record of the shows held at the George Fraser Gallery from the late 1980s through to the early 2000s. It also contains files of artists' work; not all artists represented went on to exhibit at the Gallery, but the files were retained as part of the gallery records.

In addition to the images, the collection includes some examples of exhibition applications and published ephemera used to promote and supplement the shows.
